Google is violently changing its algorithm these days and SERP rankings are greatly changing their positions. SEO experts believe that Google is now going to bring a big change in how content is ranked in SERPs and social media is believed to be the next most important factor in SEO in 2014 onwards. Facebook, the most visited yet most useless website, may be most helping in getting higher positions for your content in SERP rankings in upcoming days.
Indeed social media is impacting SERP rankings for years and the more your content is shared and liked on social networks, the higher it gains positions in SERPs. For years, Google has been emphasizing on backlinks for determining the SERP rankings and social media links were not been taken in account as other authority links, but now it is believed that social media is going to be most beneficial in delivering results in SEO practices.
If Google puts SMO first for defining SERP rankings, it will be a valid approach. Getting backlinks from websites, forums, blogs and directories is easy. Even a webmaster with very poor content on his website or blog can get a lot of backlinks from different sources to beat other websites with high quality content but with fewer links. If it happens, it is not fair at all. Although Google determines and punishes the “SPAM” and poor links, still many webmasters manage to trick Google by building somehow a natural link profile by their “SPAMMING” efforts.
You may ask “why SMO is a valid reason for defining SERP rankings?”. The answer is, quality content is liked and shared on social networks and it is harder to get social likes than links from directories, blogs, websites, forums and other sources. Yes social sharing and social likes can be purchased or exchanged also, still it will be harder than getting “unethical” links.
So to ensure that social media benefits your SEO efforts and gets higher SERP rankings for you in Google and other search engines, you must bring quality and usefulness in your website and blog content. In addition, try to build a social fan base on Google+, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and other social networks. Do you know that when someone +1s any of your post URLs on Google+, Google considers it as a vote that your site should be ranked higher in SERPs and pushes it up on search result pages. The more you will get 1+s, social likes and social sharing for your content, the higher your content’s ranking will be there on search engine result pages.
Conclusion: Social Media Optimization (SMO) is working in SEO for years and now Google is believed to giving more importance to social likes and social sharing. To get higher rankings in SERPs, write quality content, promote it on social networks and get more likes and shares for it. You will see the guaranteed results. I was not believing in SMO in beginning but now I do 🙂
